Types of Doms: Eight Ways to Hold the Reins
Every type of dom takes the lead in a dynamic, with the agreement of the person following. What they do with that lead varies so much that the kink world has built a whole vocabulary around it.
These labels are descriptions, and you can borrow from several. Most doms end up as a mix, and the mix can shift with the partner. Here are the eight you’ll meet on our results page, roughly grouped by what they enjoy most.
The all-rounder
A dominant is the general term and also a style in its own right. Picture someone who enjoys making the calls, setting the pace, and answering for how the evening goes, without needing any particular tool to do it. Stern or playful, lots of them are quiet people who’ve noticed they like being in charge of one part of their lives. The good ones spend more time listening than the word suggests. Their usual match is a submissive who wants to be led and says clearly how.
Keepers of rules and routine
Some doms want structure that lasts past the weekend. A Master or Mistress builds an ongoing arrangement with agreed rules, rituals, and real responsibility for someone who chose to give them authority. There’s a lot of admin involved, and people suited to this role tend to find the admin hot. An owner has a softer flavor: a collar, routines, rewards, and attentive affection for a partner playing a pet. Both roles are long games, and both tend to rely on written agreements like the ones in our contract generator.
Artists of intensity
A sadist enjoys giving strong sensation to someone who wants to receive it, and reads every reaction along the way. Their satisfaction comes from their partner’s, which is why they pair so well with a masochist who can say exactly how much is enough. A degrader works with words and pride in place of paddles, finding the agreed phrase or embarrassing task that makes a willing partner blush. Both styles need a sharp ear, careful negotiation, and a solid plan for kindness afterward.
Craftspeople and sparring partners
The remaining three are defined by a skill or a game. A rigger is the one with the rope, and the pleasure lies in the learning, the ties, and close attention to a partner’s body. Of all eight, it’s the style most in need of in-person instruction.
A brat tamer wants a partner who talks back, and enjoys staying amused while winning the game. Humor and follow-through count for more here than sternness. A primal hunter lives for the physical side: the chase, the catch, the growl, all inside limits everyone set beforehand. If you’ve ever wanted to stop being reasonable for twenty minutes, with a partner who feels the same, this one may be yours.
What they share underneath
For all the differences, the eight stand on the same foundation. Every one of them holds power that was handed over by a person who can take it back at any time. Every one owes a partner clear agreements, a working safeword, and attention after the scene as well as during it. Confidence helps, but the doms people go back to are the ones who ask good questions, admit their mistakes, and stop the moment they’re asked. Doms come down after intense play as well, and dom drop is common enough to plan for.
So which one are you?
Reading the descriptions will get you partway, and most people are surprised by at least one of their scores. Take the kink test and you’ll see percentages for all eight, plus how they sit next to the submissive roles. You may come out high on two or three, which often says more than any single label. If you’re new to the whole idea, our guide on how to be a dom covers the basics that apply to all of them.
