Degrader
The meanest sentence of the evening was written days earlier, by two people trying not to laugh. One of them suggested it. The other crossed out an adjective and put a star next to it. By the time you say it out loud, you both know precisely where it came from and who approved it.
The job, minus the movie villain
A degrader is someone who enjoys playing with a willing partner’s pride, the giving side of degradation kink. Mostly that means words: teasing, insults they’ve asked for, pointed remarks about how flustered they look.
The harshness is a costume the two of you picked out together. Underneath it, you’re paying closer attention than you ever do in ordinary conversation, because you’re watching how each line lands.
You might love finding the exact phrase that makes someone go pink, and you probably have a dry wit and a good ear.
Feeling uneasy about all this is common. Actual contempt for your partner outside the game is a different signal. Take that one seriously and stop playing until you’ve figured out what’s going on.
Write the list first
Words behave differently from a paddle. There’s no bruise to check on, and a line that lands badly can keep hurting long after the evening is over.
Sit down together and sort language into three piles: words that thrill them, words that might work on the right night, and words that stay off the table for good. Bodies, jobs, money, past relationships, and anything told to you in confidence are where the real damage tends to live, so keep them out unless your partner has specifically asked for them and you’ve talked it through. The limits card is handy if you’d like all this in writing.
Start well below the limit. Watch for a flinch that has stopped being fun, a voice going flat, eyes that no longer meet yours. Build in a quiet way to check, like a squeeze of the hand or a traffic-light color, and honor the safeword instantly, with no sulking and no parting shot.
When it ends, drop the character completely. Kindness afterward is half the job, and you may need some yourself, because saying those things can leave you feeling off for a day or two, a hangover the guide to dom drop covers in detail.
Getting permission to be awful
This conversation goes better when you lead with the care. Try something like: “There’s a kind of teasing I’d love to try with you, and I’d want us to pick the words together.”
If they say no or not yet, drop it cleanly and leave it dropped for a good while. If they say yes, start with the mildest thing on the list and ask how it sat with them the next morning.
The person on the other side of the list
A degradee finds this thrilling and has probably spent more time thinking about the exact words than you have, which is the best reason to write the list together.
