Rope bunny
Let’s get the name out of the way. “Rope bunny” sounds like the mascot of a hardware store, and it wasn’t picked for its dignity. You’ll also hear “rope model,” “rope bottom,” or just “the one who gets tied.” The silly version stuck anyway, so you may as well enjoy it. It covers something that can feel very serious once you’re actually in it.
The pull of being held still
A rope bunny is someone who enjoys being tied. That’s the entire definition, and the reasons vary a lot. There’s calm: the to-do list goes quiet once your arms can’t do anything about it. There’s also excitement, the snug pressure of rope, being looked at, being arranged with care by someone concentrating entirely on you.
You might recognize the pull if you linger over photos of rope work for the patterns alone, or love a tight hug that goes on longer than is socially normal. Perhaps you’ve wondered what it would be like to have nothing whatsoever to do but stay put. Any gender and any orientation can land here, and it doesn’t have to be sexual at all.
Far from dead weight
The stereotype says you lie there looking decorative. In practice you’re working the whole time. A rigger can see the rope, but only you can feel your fingers, so you’re the one supplying the most important information in the room.
Bunnies also vary in how much power exchange they want, from loving the submissive feeling of being handled to having no interest in orders and treating a session like a joint art project. Tell your partner which kind of day you’re having.
What your hands are telling you
Numbness, tingling, a sharp or burning feeling, cold fingers, a hand that won’t do what you tell it: say so immediately, even if the rigger is clearly delighted with the tie. Rope can press on nerves, and the warning signs can be faint. The rope comes off, and you’ve done nothing rude by asking. If numbness or weakness hangs around afterward, see a doctor rather than waiting it out.
Before you start, mention any old injuries or trouble with your wrists and shoulders. Eat something beforehand, and stretch a bit. Agree on a safe word along with a signal for when your hands are tied, and check where the safety shears are. Whoever ties you stays in the room, the entire time. Keep your first sessions short, with simple ties on your arms, and come out of them slowly. Some people feel spacey for a while, so some water and a stretch of aftercare are worth planning for.
Dizziness or feeling faint counts as a stop as well: say the word, get the rope off, and sit down.
Choosing who ties you
A rigger is the obvious partner, and you get to interview them: who taught them, how long they’ve been tying, where they keep their shears, what they do when your hand goes numb. A good one answers happily, and someone who waves those questions away doesn’t get to tie you.
If you’re new and don’t already have a trusted partner, look for a local rope class or a practice night, where other people are around and experienced folks can spot trouble. Those evenings are also a good way to find out who’s well regarded, because word travels fast in small communities. Learning to tie makes you much better at describing what you feel, though you can stay happily on the receiving end for years.
Things to say before the first knot
Start with what you want from it, whether that’s calm, something sexy, or just the novelty, because your rigger can only build the experience you’ve described. Be clear about touching and about what else is or isn’t included, as being tied doesn’t widen anything you agreed to earlier, and say that part out loud, ideally before the rope comes out of the bag. All of it fits in one sentence that any partner worth your time will hear gladly: “I’d like to try a simple arm tie for fifteen minutes, with no other touching unless I ask for it.” If you’d like something to hand over instead, a limits card does the job in about two minutes and gives you a record of what you said.
