Pet
Pet play means adults taking on a pet persona within a dynamic they’ve agreed on together, usually with a partner in the role of owner. What a grown adult gets out of wearing a collar and answering to a pet name is, mostly, a holiday. For an hour or two, somebody else knows what’s for dinner, your inbox can’t find you, and the only thing anyone expects is that you enjoy the attention you’re getting.
The persona, explained
A persona might have its own name, its own habits, and its own favorite spot on the couch. Gear like a collar or ears is optional. Words can go too, for a while, in favor of sounds and body language, or you can keep talking and treat the whole thing as a gentle game with a few extra rules.
At heart you set the day’s decisions aside and let yourself be fussed over, rewarded, and played with, while your partner enjoys doing the looking after. Both of you know exactly what’s going on, since you’re two adults who picked this and wrote the rules together. It can be affectionate, silly, intimate, or all three in one evening, and it doesn’t have to involve anything sexual if that’s how you want it.
You might recognize this pull
Praise and a head scratch from the right person could make your week. You like the thought of being looked after and rewarded for small things, and the idea of a collar as a symbol of belonging gives you a warm feeling you can’t quite explain to your friends. Dropping your words for a while sounds restful rather than strange. Or you simply like curling up at someone’s feet and have been wondering whether that’s a thing, which it is. People get here from many directions, including stressful jobs, a love of play, and a liking for being adored, and the test gives a rough sense of how strongly it shows up for you next to the other roles.
A first half hour at home
Start in a place where you won’t be walked in on, with a collar or a chosen name and thirty minutes on the clock. Decide in advance how long it’ll last and what you’d each like to happen, then let it be awkward, because everyone’s first time is, and laughing partway through is a good sign rather than a failure.
Agree on a stop signal before anything else, since you may not be using words. A specific sound or a double tap on your partner’s arm works well, and it’s worth trying it out once so you both trust it. You could write it on a limits card along with the things you’d like and the things you wouldn’t. If you’ll be on the floor for a while, get cushions, and tell your partner the moment your knees start to complain, because being in persona doesn’t mean putting up with being sore.
Stepping out of a persona can feel strange, so plan a few minutes afterward to talk, have a glass of water, and hear each other’s normal voices again.
How to suggest it without melting
There’s no way to bring this up that won’t feel at least slightly ridiculous, so you may as well admit it, with something like “This is going to sound odd, and you can laugh, but I’ve been curious about something.” Talk about what appeals to you, whether that’s the care, the rest, or the fun of it, before you get into the details of ears and collars. Many partners find they like the idea of looking after you far more than they expected, once they understand it’s about closeness. Pets and their people
An owner enjoys the routines, the rewards, and the responsibility of keeping you happy, and is the partner this role was built around. A kind, attentive dominant can suit you as well if they enjoy giving praise and don’t mind getting playful. So can someone who has never used any of these words, as long as they’re delighted by you and willing to learn your signals.
